Breathtaking views over the peaks and rapid downhill descents: With the e-bike, this adventure is open to all ages. But electronic cycling on the mountain is even more fun if you follow a few basic rules. With the following 10 tips, you can ensure maximum riding pleasure and safety on the mountain.

10 helpful tips for e-mountain bikes and more

1. Feel your way slowly - With an e-bike, you can cover the altitude meters even without monster condition. Nevertheless, beginners should take it slowly. After all, you are on your own on the mountain and help is not available as quickly as in the valley. You have to get used to the e-bike with all its peculiarities, so it's best to start with short tours. If you feel confident, you can then increase the difficulty and length further and further. In addition, you should familiarize yourself with the sports equipment before a mountain tour on the flat and know the equipment and functionality of the bike well.

2. Good planning is the be-all and end-all - tours with the e-bike should be planned even more meticulously than those with the organic bike. After all, you cover greater distances and a wrong turn has more consequences. In addition, the battery range is another limiting factor. A careful calculation of the route is therefore essential, it is best to use one of the numerous online route planners. Be sure to keep an eye on:

  • Elevation gain
  • Battery range
  • Condition of the participants
  • Weather
  • Twilight
In addition to a powerful e-bike that is adapted to your needs, you will definitely need weatherproof clothing, enough water, emergency provisions, a hiking map and a smartphone.

3. Be able to fix breakdowns yourself - It is advisable to be prepared for minor punctures and to be able to carry out the most important repairs yourself. Because in the mountains there is no breakdown service and who likes to push their broken e-bike down the mountain? If you take care of your bike and learn the most important tricks in advance, you will quickly know how to help yourself on the mountain. With the right tools in your luggage, chain breaks, flats or even brake problems can be repaired yourself on the go.
Tip: Professional, regular maintenance of e-bikes also reduces the likelihood of breakdowns on the mountain!

4. Calculate the battery range - When going on excursions with an e-bike, you should always keep a close eye on the range of the battery - this is especially true for tours on the mountain! The battery range depends on

  • the support level,
  • body weight,
  • and above all the meters of altitude covered.

But heavy luggage also has a significant effect on the battery range. For longer tours, you may need a second battery. The best way to do this is to develop a feeling for how long a battery charge lasts with shorter rides in the mountains.

5. Always ride seated - If you are used to the classic mountain bike, you will quickly be tempted to leave the saddle on inclines. On the Bio-Bike, this is an effective tactic for more power when pedaling and control of the vehicle. However, you should always stay seated on the e-bike: If you ride standing up, the motor pushes irregularly and there is inefficient power transmission.

6. Master steep passages with the right technique - A steep section when riding uphill is easier to master with the right technique: Go lower with your upper body towards the handlebars and place your elbows at the sides of your body. At the same time, you can try to pull the handlebars down a little backwards. This keeps your front wheel on the ground and your e-bike nice and stable. As a reminder, even on very steep passages, you should not get up!

7. Train uphill starting - The motor of e-bikes has a short latency period, i.e. it takes up to a second after the first pedaling impulse - only then does the motor support kick in. Starting off in steep terrain therefore requires a little practice. So it's best to train this before your big mountain tour.
This is the easiest way to start off: place the bike at an angle of 45 degrees perpendicular to the incline, place the foot on the ground on the uphill side and the foot on the pedal on the downhill side (about 1 o'clock position of the pedal). Engage a light gear, set the bike to turbo mode and go with your shoulders low to the handlebars. Then pull the handlebars down and pedal dynamically.
